SF Eats: Trifection in Outer Sunset

SF Eats: Trifection in Outer Sunset

Alan and I have been trying to cook more, but, you know when you just hit that wall and don’t feel inspired to make anything? We hit that pretty fast.

The silver lining of COVID though has been the number of pop-ups that have “popped up” (I’m a nerd omg) in the Bay Area! It feels like everyone and their mom is trying to do a charcuterie delivery business, but I was super intrigued by one that I saw called Trifection when I was surfing Instagram in the wee hours of the night. The photo that lured me in was a gloriously golden fried soft boiled egg dripping yolk on top of a bowl of udon noodles.

Drooling yet? Here’s the bowl IRL 😍

We checked the menu out and decided to try it out — luckily, the pickup location was only a few blocks from us in the Outer Sunset! With eyes bigger than our stomachs, we ordered way too much to try, but I really enjoyed everything we got.

You can find their menu here, and they only have pickup orders right now. Here are all the things we got and what I liked!

Thai Chicken Curry and the Trifection Holiday Box

Thai Chicken Curry and the Trifection Holiday Box

First, the udon dish that caught my eye on Instagram: the Thai Curry Chicken Udon. This comes with red cabbage, sliced cucumbers, a little pint of curry and plenty of tender chicken, udon, and, most importantly, a Panko-crusted soft boiled egg. Look at how beautiful that egg is!

The instructions say to reheat the broth, which we did in the microwave for just a minute but it was plenty hot. After pouring it all on top of the udon, I was surprised by how much chicken they gave us. The pieces were so tender and fell apart with little to no effort as I chewed them. The udon was also the perfect texture — so bouncy!

It definitely had a little kick, but the spice overall was probably a 4 on a scale of 1-10. They also called this a Thai curry udon, but the light shrimp flavor that I was getting gave me laksa vibes as I was eating this. I love laksa so this was a big deal for me!

I say this dish is a must if you’re going to order from them, especially since it’s one of the only “bigger” main dishes on the menu..

We really wanted to try the Hot Cheeto Korokke (pictured below), so when I saw this holiday box and what was in it…I knew we had to try it. I mean, look how adorable those snowmen onigiri are! I was actually really full after eating the udon, so we only ate the light brown snowman, the lotus leaf steamed rice w/ Japanese curry chicken.

We ate the kimchi rice w/ beef snowman the next day and, between the two, I liked the kimchi beef one more. The lotus leaf rice was very light in flavor and I didn’t really get any curry flavor that I was expecting from the chicken.

Dang, this was bomb. I loved the korokke, both versions of them! The dark red was a spicy chicken one coated in Hot Cheetos (I didn’t taste a whole lot of Cheeto to be honest), and the light brown was beef, potato, and corn cheese coated in Panko crumbs. This one felt like a classic Japanese croquette flavor and was delightful.

For dessert, the box came with a Strawberry Matcha Jellyroll and 3 Matcha Yuzu bars. I liked the jelly roll but wish it had a stronger strawberry flavor — it felt like the only strawberry flavor was the dusting on top. Similarly, the Matcha Yuzu bars could have had more yuzu. We did eat them a day later, but the crust to filling ratio felt off so it was a crumbly dessert with not a whole lot of curd.

Overall, a delicious box and I think it could be shared between two people and would be a satisfying snack or meal. Next time though, I would totally order just the box of korokke because those were my favorites from this box!

Black Sesame Oreo Cookies & Hojicha Biscoff Cookies

Black Sesame Oreo Cookies & Hojicha Biscoff Cookies

I was so full at this point, but when faced with a dessert containing black sesame…I can never resist! Our last treat in our Trifection order was an assorted cookie box with Black Sesame Oreo Cookies and Hojicha Biscoff Cookies. These were seriously so good!

Each one was soft and chewy, and I loved that they were not too sweet. The Black Sesame was by far Alan’s AND my favorite cookie, but it was simply because the Hojicha cookie tasted just like hojicha and we didn’t really get any hints of Biscoff flavor. The Black Sesame Oreo tasted more like Oreo but I got some black sesame in it, and I also loved that you could catch hints of that Oreo cream with every bite.

I would definitely get these again!

I chatted a bit more with the owners over text, and it turns out they only just opened Trifection in July so I can’t wait to see what else this team of three comes up with! If you want to try them out, it’s super easy to put your order in through their website, and they accept both cash and Venmo. If you live in the Outer Sunset or relatively close by, I’d say it’s worth the trip to pick up some of their food!
