Matcha Dalgona: 3 Ways
Have you tried all the flavors of dalgona coffee I came up with yet? Ready to tackle your next dalgona project?
How about trying some whipped matcha 🍵
I’ve seen different ways of making whipped matcha — the most popular seems to be with egg whites, like how you make meringues. It’s a great trick, but I prefer to eat my eggs so the idea of splitting the perfect duo physically pained me!
For my whipped matcha, I decided to stick with the tried and true ingredient: whipping cream. If you’re lactose intolerant, this might not be as great of an option as the egg white, but I think it’s way tastier! I also used matcha from Third Culture Bakery because I recently bought a bag that I’m still getting through, and I think theirs tastes pretty good.
Following my Dalgona Coffee post, I tested a few different flavors and wanted to share three of my favorites! My tips remain the same:
Use some kind of electric mixer for the whip. It's possible to do it by hand but your forearms will be SO tired — especially if you want a dalgona more than once a week!
You can make the dalgona with 1-2 tsp of sugar depending on how sweet you like it. I prefer 2 tsp because the whipping cream is basically flavorless and the matcha is more on the bitter side (you know what I mean).
Each recipe is for 1 drink basically so double or triple to your heart's content if you need to make these for someone other than yourself!
Basic Matcha Dalgona
Makes 2 servings
2 tbsp matcha (I use Third Culture Bakery)
2 tsp sugar
¼ cup whipping cream
Using a standing mixer or hand mixer, blend the ingredients together.
Keep whisking until the mixture thickens and you start seeing the whisk leaving a trail as it drags through the cream.
Your matcha dalgona is ready once you can see soft peaks keep their shape when you lift the whisk out.
Each drink below is made for 1 person. Double the recipe to use this full matcha dalgona recipe, or save the remaining half in your fridge for another day!
This one is directly inspired by the Strawberry Matcha drink from Boba Guys. It’s such a pretty drink and it also tastes great. I actually usually order mine without the boba, so this version made at home stays pretty true to what I would order from an actual store.
Strawberry Matcha Dalgona
Matcha dalgona whip
⅓ cup strawberries
2 tsp sugar
1 cup milk of your choice
Ice
Prepare the matcha dalgona whip in your mixer and put together the rest of your drink while it mixes. Check back on it frequently though because you do not want to overmix.
Option 1: If using fresh strawberries, dice them up and throw them into a small saucepan or pot with the sugar. Cook over low heat and mash the strawberries with a fork until you get a more jammy consistency. You can do this with frozen strawberries (just thaw them beforehand).
Option 2: Do this same step but with your microwave! Just do 15-second blasts and keep mashing the strawberries and sugar together until you get the consistency you want.
Put the strawberry mix into a glass, add ice, add milk, and spoon the matcha dalgona on top. Enjoy!
This drink is inspired by Third Culture Bakery’s Golden Yogi drink — it is so refreshing and the mix of turmeric and matcha always made me feel so healthy! Another plus was how pretty the drink looked: I loved the contrast between the golden turmeric and the grassy green matcha. Very IG-worthy!
Turmeric Matcha Dalgona
Matcha dalgona whip
1 tsp turmeric (I use Diaspora Co.)
1½ tsp honey
2 tbsp hot water
1 cup milk of your choice
Ice
Prepare the matcha dalgona whip in your mixer and put together the rest of your drink while it mixes. Check back on it frequently though because you do not want to overmix.
In a bowl, mix the honey, turmeric, and water until it has all dissolved. Make sure you’re thorough with this step or the honey will seize up once the ice and cold milk hits it!
Pour the turmeric mix into your glass and add the ice. Pour in the milk and top with the matcha dalgona.
Kinako Matcha Dalgona
Matcha dalgona whip
1½ tsp kinako powder (I use this brand called Wel-Pac)
2 tsp sugar
3 tbsp hot water
1 cup milk of your choice
Ice
Prepare the matcha dalgona whip in your mixer and put together the rest of your drink while it mixes. Check back on it frequently though because you do not want to overmix.
In a bowl, mix the kinako powder, sugar, and hot water until well mixed. You don’t want any clumps of powder messing up your drink!
Pour the blended mix into a glass, add ice and milk. Top it off with the matcha dalgona and a light dusting of kinako powder if you’d like!
And now to the hard part: what the heck do I make next? I’ve been feeling sort of uninspired these days, so send me recommendations or suggestions via e-mail (linked on this site) or on Instagram (I’m @gcheung28). Thanks 🙏
